A headline about the “fastest-growing state” describes a rate. A headline about the state that “added the most people” describes an absolute change. Neither measure alone tells you how many people live there.
The challenge above switches between growth rates, population increases and net domestic migration. Read the question carefully: the measurement is part of the puzzle.
How to read a population story
Check the denominator. Adding 10,000 residents means 10% growth for a place with 100,000 residents, but only 1% for a place with one million. Those are illustrative numbers, not state estimates.
Separate flows from totals. Net domestic migration subtracts people moving out to other US states from people moving in. It does not include births, deaths or international migration.
Keep the dates together. This edition uses Vintage 2025 estimates. Annual Census releases can revise earlier estimates, so comparisons should stay within a consistent vintage. This is an archived data challenge, not a live news ticker.
